Obituary for Verda M Lewis (Lewton)

Verda May Lewis (Lewton) died peacefully in her sleep on Monday October 5, 2020 at Spring Grove
Care and Rehabilitation Center in New Providence, NJ. She was 100. October 5 would have been her
75th wedding anniversary. Verda was born on December 18, 1919 in Bristol, England, a daughter
to the late Gertrude (Cooper) and Edward Lewton.
She came to the United States on February 14, 1946, having been married in England a few months
before to her husband of 53 years, Jason K. Lewis. Jason passed away in December of 1998.
Verda became a naturalized American citizen in 1953.
They settled in Oceanside, Long Island and in 1959 moved with their two sons to the Upper East Side
of Manhattan, New York City. Verda lived at 969 Park Avenue until 2011 at which time
she moved to Summit, and then Warren, and lived for eight years with her son Peter and
daughter-in-law, Karole. Verda served in the British Armed Forces and lived through the
Battle of Britain. While in England she worked as a model. Her life in the United States was marked by
volunteering actively for various school organizations through schools her sons attended.
She enjoyed walking with vigor and led a healthy lifestyle. She loved walking in Central Park, NY
and was a talented seamstress and loved to knit.
She was a huge supporter of the Eastern Opera Company of NJ.; this company was co-founded
by her daughter-in-law, Karole and her son, Peter. Karole was the General Director of the company.
She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law: Donald E. Lewis and Peter S. Lewis
(and his wife, Karole). She is also survived by her sister Betty Dickie and 5 grandchildren:
Jared, Jessica, Bob, Laura and Kim. She also had five great-grandchildren:
Rachel, Nathaniel, Mateo; Jason; and Robert.
Services were private and under the direction of the Valley Memorial Funeral Home,
1012 Valley Rd., Gillette, NJ.
